External Hemroids
External Hemroids
(External Hemorrhoids)
As hemorrhoids (sometimes spelled hemroids) are swelling and inflammation of veins in the rectum and anus, the external hemroids are located on the outside of the anus, especially around the anal opening. They too can cause a lot of discomfort because of constant friction with clothes. There are a few pictures of external hemroids in our pictures of hemorrhoids page.
Generally, you can easily notice external Hemroids by inspecting the outer opening of the anus. You can easily notice the fleshy growth around the anus, and that is an indication of external Hemroids. This is just the opposite of internal hemmeroids (internal hemorrhoids). Internal hemmeroids can only be examined by your physician or other health professional – remember, only an experienced physician or a doctor can examine internal ones.
However, the possibility of mistaking internal Hemroids – that normally lumps out of the anus – for external Hemroids cannot be denied. Apart from that, any other excess growth, swelling or occurrence of lumps in the rectum region is indicative of external Hemroids. External Hemroids occurs when there is excessive straining of the veins in the anal opening.

Like other hemorrhoids, external hemorrhoids also bring you pain and discomfort. There is hardly any difference between sufferings you get from other hemorrhoids and external hemorrhoids. Though there is no difference in the pain suffered, external hemorrhoids can be easily distinguished from other hemorrhoids due to place of its appearance.
Sometimes prolapsed hemroids are often mistaken for external hemroids. A prolapsed hemroid is an internal hemroid that started as an internal hemroid, but due to additional swelling it begins to protrude ouside the anus opening. Otherwise, any swelling or protruding mass at or near the anus are considered to be external hemroids.
Some of the symptoms of external hemorrhoids may include painful swelling or a hard lump around the anus that results when a blood clot forms. This condition is known as a thrombosed external hemorrhoid (For more information on this type, see our thrombosed hemorrhoid page). In addition, excessive straining, rubbing, or cleaning around the anus may cause irritation with bleeding and/or itching, which may produce a vicious cycle of symptoms. Draining mucus may also cause itching.
If an external hemroid lasts more than a few days, then you should talk to your doctor and have it examined. In severe cases, hemroids are removed in a hemroid surgery called hemorrhoidectomy.
